What are the factors that cause Male Infertility?

One-third factors for infertility are contributed by the female partners, and other one-third factors because of the male partner and the remaining one third remain unexplained. All attributes have their equal share in contributing to the couple being infertile.

Fertility of a man depends on both the quality and quantity of the sperm. If a man ejaculates less number of sperms or if the quality of ejaculated sperm is poor, it poses a problem in conceiving by the couple.

Many people have a myth in their minds that infertility causes because of the women’s inability but male partner also contributes to the couples being infertile.

But do you know what causes infertility in men? Read further to know the factors that cause male infertility.

Here are the factors which are responsible for infertility in males:

1. Varicocele:

If the veins around a male’s testicles get swelled, the condition is referred to as Varicocele. This situation may lead to poor quality of sperms production.

2. Ejaculation Issues:

a) A man can suffer from premature ejaculation which affects their chances of conception. The causes of premature ejaculation are:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Emotional factors
  • Neurogenic disorders like uncontrolled diabetes

b) In some men, semen enters the bladder rather than emerging out from the penis during the excitement of sex, retrograde ejaculation occurs. Health conditions which led to retrograde ejaculation are as follows:

  • Spinal Injuries
  • Diabetes
  • Surgery of the prostate, urethra, or bladder
  • Medications

3. Hormonal Imbalance:

Imbalance of hormones like Pituitary, Thyroid, Adrenal, and Hypothalamus can also be one of the major reasons of infertility.

4. Tumors:

A person affected with cancer or any other tumor may also suffer the problem of infertility. In many of the cases, treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapies could also lead to infertility.

5. Overuse of gadgets:

Because overuse of gadgets causes increased temperature, which in turn may reduce the sperm production. Working on a laptop for long hours or wearing tight clothes can also increase the scrotum’s temperature which degrades the quality of a sperm.

6. Alcohol:

Excessive intake of Alcohol may lower the production of sperms in the body of a male. Alcohol often leads to liver diseases, which can also be another reason for infertility in males.

7. Maldescended testicles:

Testicles are ball-like structure, responsible for producing testosterone and sperm. The maldescended testicle is a condition where either one or both of the testicles don’t move down into the scrotum.

It may happen because of an anatomical abnormality or lack of hormones. Males with one undescended testis or bilateral undescended testes might have a lower fertility rate.

8. A defect in the tubules:

A male reproductive system that carries sperms has many tubular structures. When those tubes get blocked either because of the abnormal development or injury and surgery, a person may have to deal with infertility.

9. Childhood history of mumps, trauma to the testes also affect the sperm count:

Mumps is a viral infection which primarily affects the parotid glands. But when it comes to males, it may also affect their testicles, leading to a condition called “orchitis”. If this condition occurs before the puberty age, it usually does not affect testicles. But if mumps affects post-pubertal males, 30% of the boys also develop orchitis.

Orchitis can drop down the sperm production rate, which in turn results in infertility.
